Well, here's another go at Blender and it's looking more and more human. However, this time it looks like a mask...
gave me this image to copy off of for the face, but I suppose it still didn't turn out so great. My dream of making a functional model probably won't come to fruition, though it's on my New Year's resolutions list. I guess I'll have to give it another go...

I've never used Blender, unfortunately, so I can't offer program-specific advice, but I can throw some tutorials at you.

[link] <--This will explain a little bit about edge loops and poles and hopefully help you make nice meshes.
[link] <--Really great site that goes over modelling for animation and articulation.
[link] <--Collection of rigging references, which I honestly haven't sorted through yet, so YMMV.
